Riviera
A bakery on Nansensgade with Ligurian roots. The site opens like a 1960s Italian film, credits over stills, run live in the browser to its own score, and the bakery's photos come through a projector's gate as you scroll.

The brief
I've been to Riviera on Nansensgade a few times now, and I keep going back for the room (the long table, the red marble counter, the light through those big windows), for how easy it is to sit there, and for their tebirkes. Chiara Barla and Yoel Tschernia run it, and Chiara bakes from her Ligurian roots. They don't have a website, so I made them one, and I'm proposing it to them. Until they say yes, it runs here on my site.
The approach
Chiara is Italian, so the site opens the way a 1960s Italian film does: credits over stills of the room, bursts of their own photos cut to a score made for it, and an end card that is the homepage, their wordmark in butter on salmon. It runs live in the browser, grain and flicker included. Below it the bakes are a cast list, and their photos run through a projector's gate as you scroll. The film is cut from FRAMA's photos and their Instagram for now; next I'm going back to Riviera to shoot my own footage for it.

Titoli
Once a visit the site asks for sound, then opens on its titles, the credits cutting in over three frames the way a printed title fades up. Skip, or a scroll, goes to the end card.

02 / 06
The end card
The titles end on their wordmark, and that card is the homepage. On a computer the wordmark flies up into the bar as the page leaves it.

03 / 06
In ordine di apparizione
The bakes as a cast list: the Italian role, a still, the name. Each name draws its letters together as it reaches the middle of the screen, and its still opens from a line.

04 / 06
La sala
FRAMA's photographs of the room on a projector held on the screen. Scrolling cuts from shot to shot and moves the camera within one, with the Italian title and its line as subtitles.

05 / 06
The reel
Twelve of their own photos, from the dough to the table, as slide film pulled through a lit gate. A slow scroll reads one frame at a time; a quick one runs them past, blurred. The perforations and the edge print are the shader's.

06 / 06
Dove
The address prints a letter a frame, the hours below it. Fine ends the page over the reel's last frame, held still.
